This series was done during my pregnancy in 2009. It all started during my surprise hospital stay with my first pregnancy at age 40.
I was only going for a brief doctors appointment, and then go home to continue my bed rest, so I thought. My doctor wanted me to stop by the hospital to do a simple test, which would only take a few hours. But when I arrived at the hospital, the new doctor I met freaked out, and decided to keep me there. I had no clothes or provisions to stay overnight at a hospital, not to mention the cash that they wanted upfront before they would admit me. It all turned into a very stressful crazy predicament. Never expecting to be placed in such a situation, my plan was to have a home birth, but my body had other ideas.
My son Joshua just didn’t want to wait any longer and he came two months early. In total, I stayed in the hospital for about 7 weeks.
I used that time to soothe myself by putting my emotions to paper. There was so much more that came out after giving birth, so it became a mass of works that I wanted to share with the world. Many who have had children, been in hospitals, or just in unfortunate situations, will understand these artistic depictions.
Stippling is a technique that I find to be a way of zoning out and relaxing the mind. It is creating shapes and patterns with only small dots, which is similar to pointillism. The tedious focus on placement and balance was something that I could actually control, at a time when I could not control my own health situation.
